Corner Garden Native Plantings

Enhancing Shoreline Biodiversity at Beach Road & West Shore Avenue

Groton Long Point Corner Garden

The Corner Garden was created by the GLP Conservation Commission to highlight how plants native to our area can work in our shoreline neighborhood. Native plants are not only beautiful, but they provide a rich array of environmental services to our landscape. Their pollen, nectar, and seeds feed birds, butterflies, moths, bees, and other insects.

In the summer of 2024, volunteers Elaine Shumway and Tim Friar spent invaluable hours removing poison ivy from the site, followed by amended soil delivered by Park & Rec Director Steve Boccia. Designed and planted in 2025, the garden includes more than 130 native plants of 10+ different varieties.

The "3-3-3" Native Garden Rule

Plant at least 3 species of plants, with at least 3 plants of each species, for each of the 3 seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall).
